Complacentitis Is Curable If You Break The ROUTINE

We’ve become a society terrified of change. We like things to stay just the way they are. It’s easier that way.

Stretching the boundaries and personal accomplishment are not product of the status quo. It’s because our brains are wired to follow the same patterns.

Maybe it’s your personal life that is on auto-pilot, or you’re not at your peak in your professional life. Whatever the reason…

Stop complaining. Do something about it.

If you find yourself idling and feel the need to take a different road, make the move. Don’t sit idle, you’ll run out of gas.

Do you feel like you’re in the same routine going through the same motions day in and day out? Interacting with the same cast of characters, doing the same activities can grow old over time.

If you can identify with any of the debilitating descriptors below then you’ve fallen into a R O U T I N E and you’ll need to read on for further guidance…

R – Rundown
O – Out of sorts
U – Usual Suspects
T – Timid to change
I – Incapable of imagining
N – Nothing seems exciting
E – Everything is the same

We’ve become automated without even knowing it.
Our daily routines have taken over our lives.

How can we excel at anything in life if we don’t learn to push ourselves to the next level?

It’s equivalent to being in the neutral position. Your engine is running but you’re not moving forward.
If complacency is the disease, change is the cure! Let’s start with a few easy steps.

Complacentitis is curable if you work at it.
Here are 7 tips to get your started:

  1. Intentionally seek out new ideas to improve your surroundings.
  2. Start a list of ideas that can lead to progress in fulfilling your mission.
  3. Identify at least one actionable item a day, and make the necessary changes.
  4. Make an attempt to apply new ideas to your everyday life.
  5. Drive a different way to work. Try a new restaurant. Move your furniture around.
  6. Review your processes and procedures; how can they be improved?
  7. What little improvements can you make that will impact the big picture?

One thing is certain. You’ll have a new direction in your life.
These changes will help you become more and more efficient and effective.
Don’t settle for mediocrity.
Settle for excellence!

If it ain’t broke, break it!

My Video Book will help you cure the 5 Human Ailments, and put you on a path to your dreams!

UNLOCK YOUR TRUE POTENTIAL: Cure The 5 Human Ailments™
You'll never realize your true potential if you suffer from the 5 Human Ailments: Copycatosis, Complacenitis, Not Now Fever, Judgmentanoma, or Dirty Money Disease. The history of human experience is full of tales of success and failure and amazing stories of perseverance. What separates the average person from the exceptional? ...

If It Ain’t Broke, Break It! Here’s How…

Why try and fix anything in your life that doesn’t need fixing, it simply doesn’t make sense – agree? Isn’t there enough to do without worrying about things that aren’t broken? I would imagine at this point you agree with the age old phrase – If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It?

Stagnation and complacency are killing excellence as more and more leaders settle for mediocrity! Why wait for anything to be broken before trying to improve it? You improve it by challenging the status-quo. The key is to never settle! Continuous improvement is the name of the game and that means leaving your comfort zone!

This is the seventh and final installment of the seven part series in which I’ve addressed each of the negative aspects which lead down the path of the ROUTINE. The seventh step to breaking out of your ROUTINE is to not wait for things to break before you fix them. Stay on the edge, be relevant and you’ll stay in the lead.

If It Ain’t Broke, Break It!

Step 1: Recognition: Knowing you can always do better is the first sign of a brink thinker. You should never settle quickly, it’s important to always want more. The key is to recognize that you’re going to have to revisit and reposition areas in your life that may not be obvious on the surface. The need for improvement is a self-reflection of who you are and what you stand for and requires serious introspection.

Step 2: Realization: If you are to get beyond a ‘don’t fix it’ mentality, then realize that your dreams and goals are obtainable. You must be willing to deconstruct aspects of your life that don’t necessarily appear to be broken. This is the most difficult part of the process to breaking out of your routine. Look at it this way, if you examine and rearrange the areas in your life that are on auto-pilot chances are you’ll create additional vertical opportunities and be able to refocus your energy on the important things.

Step 3: Advancement: The question to ask yourself is ‘how can I advance my dreams forward?’ A good idea will remain only a good idea unless you can advance it to a great idea! Moving your agenda of dreams forward is a sign of greatness. Question everything around you, both good and bad. Look at the alternatives, this is not the time to play follow the leader, it’s the time for leaders to expand their horizons.

Step 4: Understanding: You’ll want to know all the steps involved. What will it take to get to the finish line? List out all the milestones in an activity log. There can always be change along the journey, but it’s important to thoroughly comprehend the project parameters and end goal. Define the best and worst case scenarios as well as the probable outcome and prepare for each.

Step 5: Execution: The fulfillment of the action steps and execution of the details are essential to a positive outcome. The key to great execution is always found in the details. An attention to detail is what will separate you from all the others who are also after the pot of gold at the end of the project. Detail execution will insure that your name rises to the top of any list.

Step 6: Bravery: Timidness never won anyone the sale. The determination to prevail through difficult times is the clear sign of a winner. Never giving up even though the odds are against you is a strength of the mighty few. Bravery is often misdiagnosed as cockiness – don’t be swayed, confidence comes from within – it’s that inner source of strength that you pull from that will see you through. If you are to get from a ‘don’t fix it’ attitude to a ‘break it’ mentality then you must overcome the fear of failure.

Step 7: Revisit: Never be afraid to revisit the project parameters, the action steps, or the milestones. Practice makes perfect, if you’re willing to retrace your steps. If your goal is to make your surroundings better, more efficient, less painful, or more prosperous then reevaluate the current state of affairs and consider alternatives – you’ll want to be as flexible as you can be.

Doing what you need to do to make a living is necessary, doing what you want to do to accomplish your dreams is visionary. The key is to determine how to make a living doing what you`love. This is determined by fulfilling a need – you connect that with your dream and you’ll have a winner.

A mind open to the unfamiliar, a desire for an improved lifestyle, and an environment which encourages risk taking are all keys to becoming a Brink Thinker! Get started today with an entirely new ROUTINE. If It Ain’t Broke, Break It!

6 Ways to ReKindle Your Passion

It’s far too easy to get stuck in a rut when your daily routine becomes passionless. We all have those days where we feel that we’re going through the motions of a thankless life. It’s impossible to get excited about your life and your work without passion. Passion can only come from within, it’s an intense emotion consisting of feeling, enthusiasm, or desire for something better. Without passion, details suffer, the quality is hindered and the overall outcome diminished. Passion is that feeling of unusual excitement or just having a positive affinity towards life. When we are passionate about our life`, it almost always results in a greater satisfaction. Doing what you truly love in life is a gift.

George Bernard Shaw insisted that there are passions far more exciting than the physical ones… “intellectual passion, mathematical passion, passion for discovery and exploration: the mightiest of all passions”.

The sixth step to breaking out of your ROUTINE is to reconnect with your PASSION.

6 Ways to ReKindle Your Passion:

  1. Re-examine your projects, what is the end goal of each? Often we find ourselves spinning our wheels with activity that has no purpose, they don’t connect to our end-goal – yet we tie up incredible amounts of time. These projects drag us down and have no real value. You might even be doing them because they’ve become your routine. Until you revisit all of your priorities, you won’t know which are vital to the mission and which need to be replaced.
  2. Re-prioritize your priorities. There is a question we often asked in the advertising business- ‘Are you working in your business or on your business’? Chances are you’re working in your business. It’s a routine that is fairly common amongst business executives. You must delegate the time to working and growing your business and the busy filler work will have to come after the fact.
  3. What are you using your prime time for? I always questioned the people on the front lines, in sales or in marketing positions, and asked for their time allocations. Prime-time is 9-12 and 2-5, while some industries end at 4. So in essence you have 5 to 6 hours a day to ‘make it happen’. Not for admin type work, not for internal programs and gossip – for contacting and selling customers, reaching industry leaders and media people, etc. Prime-time can not be compromised if you’re serious about growing your business with passion.
  4. Breaking out of your ROUTINE requires change. There are not many people that like and embrace change, so unless you’re one of these people you’ll need to force yourself to change for the better. Successful people never stay idle, they morph and change at the speed of their surroundings. Start by changing the simple things around you, then jump to some of the more difficult items.
  5. If you’re stuck in a rut, the only way to get unstuck is to change the environment around you – that includes the negative people that are holding you back. It’s a fact that winning people hang with winning people. Evaluate the people who influence your decision making.
  6. The ‘if you could do anything what would you do’ question? It has to be asked. You don’t want to wake up at 70 with unfulfilled goals and dreams. Goals that you never had the time or courage to focus on. When you’re energized and committed to the end goal, you’ll find unbridled passion you never thought you had. What is your passion? What do you truly want to do when you grow up? These are not rhetorical questions. Answer the questions for yourself and start the process of planning your mission with all the passion you can muster.

A mind open to the unfamiliar, a desire for an improved lifestyle, and an environment which encourages risk taking are all key to becoming a Brink Thinker! Look for the seventh and final segment of the routine series and you’ll become more adept to change. Get started today with an entirely new ROUTINE.

Imagine Freeing Yourself To Pursue Your Wildest Ideas

I’ve heard all the excuses by now; you’re not creative enough; you have no imagination; you don’t know how to get where it is you’d like to go – many of you are not even sure of where you’d like to go! The facts are, you are creative, you have an imagination and deep down inside yourself you do know what it is you’d like to do when you grow up (even if you are 65). If you learn nothing else from me, please know you can achieve your goals if you would just let yourself go and unleash your imagination!

This is the fifth installment of our seven week series where we address each of the negative aspects which lead down the path of the ROUTINE. The fifth step to breaking out of your ROUTINE is to unleash your imagination. Each week we’ll take on another chapter to help you break out of your ROUTINE.

E >> Everything is the same

Change your ROUTINE to expand your imagination:

Imagine life with no limitations: Why do people limit their ability to think freely? Because they’re too busy figuring out how to get out of the box they’ve trapped themselves in. Too many of you are carrying around this box-mind where you keep all your conscious and self-conscious thoughts and every blue moon you try and get beyond all of this with the lamest of all the lame statements; ‘Thinking outside of the box’. Don’t place limitations on your ability to accomplish the things you wish to accomplish. You and only you can limit your imagination. When you remove the box from your thinking, you remove the limitations. Keep an open mind and know that everything is possible. Just because it hasn’t been done before does not mean it can’t be done. Even if it has been done before, you might have a better idea and be able to do it more efficiently, obtain a better result, or improve it to some degree. It is not as difficult as you make it out to be. Unleash your imagination and let it free by keeping no boxes in your life – period. If you have no boxes, then you’ll never have to worry about thinking outside of them again.

Imagine life with no limitations

Imagine you could be today the person of your dreams

Imagine freeing yourself to pursue your wildest ideas

Imagine you could BE today the person of your dreams: Most people believe that if they DO the right things in life, then they’ll HAVE whatever their desire, and only then can they BE the person they’d like to be. The key is to imagine that your goal has already been achieved. Put yourself in the mindset of having accomplished your goal, this mind shift can and will change everything in your life! For instance if you want to be the best salesperson you know, then act like it. Let your style and emotions take your forward. Execute like you’re the best salesperson in the world. If you believe it, the people around you will start to believe it as well. The best manager, the best author, the best singer – when you place yourself square in that role to BE the best you can be, you will DO what it takes to win, and you’ll HAVE the outcome you desire. Be-Do-Have is a simple mind shift that places your future in the now! Those who can shift the paradigm from DO-HAVE-BE to BE-DO-HAVE are empowering themselves to imagine life the way it should be. You think and do that enough times and guess what – you will be the person you wish to be!

Imagine freeing yourself to pursue your wildest ideas: What transforms an average idea into a good idea? Every good idea has three stages, planning, execution and persistency. The planning of the idea and the physical execution of that idea are critical stages, but persistency is the only stage that can take your idea to the next level. What makes a good idea an exceptional idea? Exceptional ideas are those absurd, fleeting moments you have when you imagine something wonderful in your life, something you sorta believe can happen, but you convince yourself that the idea is too extreme, too bizarre, too absurd! Let’s be clear here, nothing is too absurd for any one of us. Truly successful people who’ve hit their peak in their quest for greatness have all been accused of …(place your adjectives here). This is what I call a Brink Thinking moment. It’s that defining moment between you and your wild idea. It’s a moment that will define who you are and separate you from all the cowards that are simply too afraid to step out of their average existence.

7 Tips To Opening Up Your Imagination:

  1. Look within your personal and business life for the most vulnerable areas of weakness. Take one item at a time and chart out a new course by listing three methods of improvement.
  2. Take one day a week and do nothing the usual way. Wake up at a different time, change your eating habits, drive a different way to work/stores, change your entire routine. No exceptions, force yourself to change every aspect of your daily habits.
  3. Always keep a journal or an iPad app with you to record all those fast fleeting moments of crazy and wild ideas that pop into your mind. The problem is they pop out of your mind as quickly as they popped in. Capture these thoughts, they may not mean too much at the moment but they may prove most valuable down the road.
  4. I find it most helpful to force myself to change up the environment and allow my mind to wander. Follow your mind wherever it wanders, this is the time to think of all the wild ideas you can muster. No restrictions here, don’t complicate matters with action steps and an overactive mind that tells you it can’t be done.
  5. Look for the need. Wherever the need exists, a solution can be found. The greatest of innovations all started with a seedling of an idea that was based on a need. You fulfill a need for someone and you’ve got a customer or friend for life.
  6. I can guarantee you that you are an incredibly creative person. First except the fact that creativity means many things to many people, but creativity is nothing more than problem solving. You make decisions everyday, correct? You solve some of your problems everyday, correct? Then you are most certainly creative. Creativity is nothing more than problem solving.
  7. Always consider all the possibilities. Look at each situation like a compass, there is a north, south, east and west direction. Your role is to find multiple answers to every problem or challenge – just like a compass – use all the possible directions available to you.

A mind open to the unfamiliar, a desire for an improved lifestyle, and an environment which encourages risk taking are all key to becoming a Brink Thinker! Look for the sixth segment and you’ll become more adept to change. Get started today with an entirely new ROUTINE.

Work, Home, Dinner, Bed, Wake up, REPEAT

So you wake up, go to work, come home, eat dinner, retire to bed, wake up and start the process all over again. There may never be ‘the perfect time’… and then what? Too many people never experience the ultimate high, because they’re stuck in low gear waiting for everything and everyone around them to be perfect.

The perfect time is a grand illusion.

The perfect time only happens when your mind catches up to your fear. Listen friends we talk ourselves in and out of more opportunities because of a condition known as FEAR. Fear is the ultimate dream killer. We are fearful of things that may never happen, but we fear them anyway. Make FEAR your new friend! You make your own breaks, no one else is responsible for your successes, your failures, or for your dreams.

Do you ever wonder why some people succeed in a big way while others struggle to get by? Being the best that you can possibly be is no accident. We all have unlimited potential to succeed at whatever we put our minds to. Unfortunately many people will never realize that potential because they suffer from one or more of what I call the “5 Human Ailments”, if you know the signs you can avoid them all together. My video book will help you identify the signs and provide the roadmap forward.

  1. Copycatosis
  2. Complacentitis
  3. Not-Now-Fever
  4. Dirty Money Disease
  5. Judgmentanoma
